Land Acknowledgement

We acknowledge that we are gathered on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe peoples,  specifically the Fort William First Nation, signatories to the Robinson–Superior Treaty of 1850. This land has been cared for since time immemorial, shaped by generations of Indigenous knowledge, relationships, and stewardship rooted in respect for the land, water, and all living beings.

We recognize that this place is more than a physical location—it is a living landscape rich with history, language, culture, and spirit. The Anishinaabe peoples have maintained deep and enduring connections to this land despite the impacts of colonization, displacement, and systemic injustice. Their continued presence, leadership, and resilience are a testament to strength, survival, and an ongoing commitment to future generations.

As we gather here, we are reminded that reconciliation is not a one‑time act, but an ongoing responsibility. It requires us to listen, to learn the true histories of this land, to reflect on the ways we benefit from it, and to take meaningful action that supports Indigenous self‑determination, sovereignty, and well‑being. Acknowledging the land also calls on us to challenge colonial systems, uphold treaty relationships, and honour the rights and voices of Indigenous peoples in both our words and our actions.

We offer this acknowledgement with humility and gratitude, recognizing that respect for the land must be reflected in how we live, work, and care for one another. May this acknowledgement inspire continued learning, accountability, and a deeper commitment to walking alongside Indigenous communities in a spirit of truth, respect, and shared responsibility.

Anti-Black Racism Statement

At Northwest Wellness, we are deeply committed to integrating equity into all aspects of our work. As part of this commitment, it is essential to acknowledge Canada’s history of enslavement, racial segregation, and systemic marginalization, and the profound and lasting harm these injustices have caused to people of African descent. The persistent realities of systemic anti‑Black racism and inequity—across education, housing, employment, health care, criminal justice, politics, and beyond—can be directly traced to the dehumanizing enslavement of African peoples and its enduring legacies in Canada.

Canada has neither fully recognized nor adequately educated the public about its history of slavery or the entrenched anti‑Black racism that has resulted from it. Yet, despite these ongoing barriers, Black Canadians have made extraordinary contributions in every field. These achievements are all the more remarkable given the historic and systemic obstacles they have faced. Honouring and understanding the history and lived experiences of Black Canadians is critical to building a more just, inclusive, and discrimination‑free society.

Northwest Wellness proudly honours the resilience, leadership, and monumental contributions of Black individuals, communities, and professionals, and recommits to advancing equity, accountability, and meaningful change—today and every day.
