Trauma Recovery with Safety and Choice

Trauma can leave you feeling on edge, disconnected, overwhelmed, shut down, or uncertain about what you need. These responses can develop after childhood experiences, recent distressing events, ongoing harm, or trauma carried through family and community histories. We offer trauma counselling in person in Thunder Bay and virtually for children, teens, and adults located throughout Ontario who want compassionate, client-centred support at a pace that feels manageable.

Support That Respects Your Story

Recovery from trauma does not follow a single path. Your experiences, strengths, culture, relationships, and goals all matter in the counselling process. We offer a flexible, research-informed approach that makes room for emotional safety, meaningful connection, and your right to make choices about the work we do together.

People may seek trauma counselling while living with:

  • Childhood trauma and attachment wounds

  • Complex trauma connected to repeated or long-term experiences

  • Recent distressing events and difficult life changes

  • Intergenerational trauma and experiences shaped by family, community, or systemic harm

  • Anxiety, fear, numbness, shame, grief, or relationship concerns connected to past experiences

Cultural responsiveness is part of creating a respectful therapeutic space. Our clinicians approach each person’s lived experience, including experiences of racism, colonialism, displacement, or systemic harm, with care, curiosity, and without assumptions about what healing should look like.

At Northwest Wellness, we offer a respectful space to explore what you have been carrying and identify support that feels right for you. Our trauma counselling in Thunder Bay and virtual trauma counselling across Ontario can help you move forward with care, clarity, and practical tools. Contact Northwest Wellness when you are ready to discuss in-person support in Thunder Bay or virtual trauma counselling anywhere in Ontario.

Gentle Approaches to Trauma Counselling

Beginning with what is happening in your life now can create space before moving toward difficult memories. Stabilization, coping skills, and building a sense of safety may be important parts of early sessions. You remain in control of what you share, what you would like to focus on, and the pace of the process.

Our clinicians may include EMDR-informed work, gentle processing methods, and somatic techniques that bring attention to the ways stress and trauma can show up in the body. EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is an evidence-based therapy that may use bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, to support the processing of distressing memories. In a trauma-informed approach, Northwest Wellness clinicians introduce EMDR-informed work, somatic techniques, and gentle processing methods with your consent and adapt them to your needs, readiness, and sense of safety rather than following a fixed formula. This can involve noticing physical sensations, practising grounding, or developing greater awareness of cues that signal comfort or distress.

What You Can Expect in Sessions

Early sessions provide space to talk about what has brought you to counselling and what you hope may feel different. We can identify concerns, strengths, sources of support, and the approaches that feel most suitable for you. Some clients benefit from ongoing individual counselling, while others may be interested in intensive therapy options offered by our clinicians that allow focused time for therapeutic work.

For children, Northwest Wellness clinicians may include conversation, play, and creative activities that help them express feelings and experiences in developmentally appropriate ways. Parents and caregivers can also be supported in understanding their child’s needs while maintaining the child’s emotional safety and privacy.

Care Grounded in Connection and Respect

We believe healing is possible, even when trauma has affected your sense of safety, relationships, or connection to yourself. Our role is to offer non-judgmental guidance and a steady space where your experiences can be met with care. Our trauma counselling in person in Thunder Bay and virtually across Ontario is grounded in collaboration, choice, and respect for your own knowledge of your life.

Alongside client counselling, Northwest Wellness clinicians also offer professional clinical consultation and supervision, including EMDR consultation for therapists and social workers. This work reflects our commitment to thoughtful, trauma-informed care for clients and the professionals who support them.
